How to Travel with Children on the Airplane

The idea of traveling with children is daunting. Then to take them on a airplane and expect them to sit for a few hours. This is just sounds awful. From what to pack to how to get there, it’s rife with potential worries. Did I pack enough or did I over pack?

I remember my first family vacation with my 5 old month baby. He wasn’t sleeping through the night yet. He was a big baby, 90 percentile growth chart. And he ate all the time. I was terrified of traveling with a baby but I needed this trip and I couldn’t leave without him. So I made up my mind and decided to take him with me.

When I googled what to pack when traveling with a baby, I found things like take everything you need to make the baby comfortable. They listed things like the baby rocker, the baby swinger, baby carrier, etc. OMG this list was insane. As I started to pack, I quickly realized that it was too much things I was going to pack with me. I was only going to pack the necessary items such as diapers, wipes, and clothes. Everything else I can do without, if needed I can always go buy.

However, I have some some tips that can help you prepare, and can save you from stress and going insane.

Take a late fly or over night

This way the kids are tired and sleeping. By the time we arrive, the kids are awake and up ready to enjoy the trip.

Avoid flights with layers overs / multiple stops

If you are a parent, you already know how much work it is going get in the car to go anywhere. Boarding a plane and deplaning is a thousand times worst than that, because of all the other people on the same flight.

Check in your strollers or car seats when you check in your luggage

One less thing to worry about at the airport and it’s free to check them in. Oh did I mention it’s FREE! Does that sell it? As a mom, I am a minimalism. If I don’t need it, I rather not hall it. So I can spend more attention to my children.

Assign the children’s seats away from the aisle

When I buy my tickets, try to buy the entire row of seats and assign my children on the window. The window can help entertain the kids with the view. And also this way you lock them from the aisle.

By all means, use Pull-Ups

It’s bad enough as adult going to the bathroom while in the plane but when your baby needs a diaper change. The bathroom on the airplane are a tight, tight space and typically there is a line. So I buy Pull-Ups, to speed up the trip in the bathroom. Or you can avoid the trip to the bathrooms all together and do a quick change.

Beware of germs

Thousands of people come in and out of the airport. CBS NEWS reported a study in 2018 that airport security trays carry more germs than toilets. Read more about it here. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/airport-security-trays-carry-more-germs-than-toilets-study-finds/

As a mother, the last thing I would want is my children to get sick while on vacation. So sanitize, sanitize, sanitize! Honestly you could never sanitize enough.

Bring surprises

I allow each child to pack one toys and their favorite book(s). Along with their blanket, a small surprise from the dollar store. I buy coloring book packets or a play dough.

Keep your composure

Your children feed off your energy, it’s so important to keep yourself calm. Know what you can control and what you can’t. You can control your reaction and tone of voice. But what you can’t control is your children and other people. However you can influence. Read more about this in the circle of control.
